Jeune femme en buste dite la Florentine (c.1840-1841). Hippolyte Flandrin (French, 1809-1864). Oil on canvas. © Musée d’Évreux.
Like Ingres, Flandrin believed that a true draftsman would find the proper colors with which to clothe his forms. He sought harmonious combinations of color that were appropriate to the subject and pleasing to the eye. That the color of his portraits is natural and observed from life is evident in Jeune femme en buste dite la Florentine.
